More about the building project

Building project bids within original estimates
The Building Committee has good news about anticipated costs for the projects to be funded by the Renew + Rebuild = Revival! campaign: Bids fall within the original estimates.

Now, with a successful capital campaign, Broadway will be able to:

  • Repair and renovate the north entrance
  • Expand our gathering space
  • Replace and enclose the southeast entrance
  • Add the elevator shaft for a future car
  • Expand and improve the main floor bathrooms
  • Replace our failing air conditioner

Capital campaign theme: Renew + Rebuild = Revival!

During a special congregational meeting Nov. 8, Broadway members approved the launch of a $469,000 capital campaign to raise funds to repair and renovate the church building. This will be the largest project undertaken by Broadway Covenant Church since its inception.

The planned renovations include a remodeled north entrance with expanded gathering space, a renovated southeast entrance with new restroom facilities, and a new air conditioning unit for the sanctuary. Construction is likely to start in spring.

Kim and Steve Schweitzer lead the steering committee for the capital campaign. They also served on the building committee, along with Al Damrose, Carl Ecklund, Keith Holmertz, Eric Holstein and Randy Price.

These three drawings from the architect provide views of the renovated floor plan, front of the church building, and east side of the building.

Building project to be considered in special meeting

Broadway Covenant members can expect a special meeting to be scheduled this fall to consider proposed renovations and improvements to the church building.

The Leadership Team accepted and endorsed a recommendation from the Building Committee, subject to bids from contractors. Firm quotes from contractors are likely to be available in late September. After contractors have submitted quotes, members will decide in a special meeting whether to proceed with the project

Recommended changes to the church building include:
- A remodeled front entrance to replace the existing flat roof and expand the gathering space in the front narthex, with a new east entry to the front narthex from the parking lot;
- New air conditioning for the sanctuary and front narthex;
- Replacement of the southeast entrance with a covered entrance and new steps, along with installation of an elevator shaft to prepare the building for future installation of an elevator, and
- Potential remodeling of the restrooms off the Nelson Lounge.

Building Committee evaluated project priorities FrontElevation of Proposed Broadway Coventnat project 2008
The Building Committee evaluated priorities presented by participants in the survey taken during the winter by The Timothy Group (TTG). Based on the survey, TTG found that Broadway Covenant is ready for a capital campaign. TTG also recommended that if we proceed, we launch a smaller campaign than presented in our Case Statement. The committee is considering the size of campaign that would be required to undertake those projects. These are the priorities identified in the survey: the north narthex and entrance; the east entrance; and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The Building Committee has worked with architect Brad Hoffman and others to insure that the committee's recommendation to the Leadership Team falls within the parameters of the survey and guidelines from TTG.

Background on Building Committee activity
The Building Committee and the Leadership Team met with The Timothy Group Jan. 20. During that meeting, Don Distelberg of TTG reported on the results of the Readiness Questionnaire. Both groups evaluated the information so recommendations could be made to the full membership.  We will keep you posted in future Messengers, bulletins and on the web site. Broadway Covenant members approved expenditures for fundraising and architectural services at a special meeting Sept. 24. The survey, which precedes any fundraising activity, asked members about their opinions of Broadway Covenant's activities and the proposed building projects. Information from the fundraising survey and architectural services will help members consider projects to maintain and update the church building's mechanical systems and structure. Watch this space for more information. Building Committee members are Steve Schweitzer, Keith Holmertz, Carl Ecklund, Eric Holstein, Al Damrose, Randy Price and Kim Schweitzer.Broadway Covenant Floor Plan Proposal
